CLUB PRESIDENT
In welcoming our visitors in this, our Centenary season, whether you are a player, committee representative or loyal fan, we shall endeavour to make sure that you are treated well, both on and off the pitch, whatever the ultimate result. First of all I would like to apprise you of a few things. As a club we have taken another step (perhaps more of a giant leap) upwards into the higher echelons of English rugby union.
Our rugby club was born out of the Synthetic and Nitrates Company which eventually became ICI. Originally we were the rugby section of the Synthonia Sports Club and for many years simply regarded as a 'factory' team. Although our date of inauguration is 1924, during the autumn of 1923, players were recruited, training started and coaching commenced in earnest. The very first game was against West Hartlepool Secondary School when Billingham Synthonia Rugby Football Club won by 8 points to 6. Our first dinner was held in April 1928 and the following year saw us achieve Senior Club status. Although
"… the pavilion was a wooden but and tin basins with cold water did service in place of showers"
We have come on a bit since those days, however, and since the turn of this century we have opened the new clubhouse on a new ground at Greenwood Road, courtesy of lottery funding. Then in August 2017 we added the Artificial Grass Pitch thanks to RFU, but this year, following our league and Durham County Senior cup wins of last season we start life in National 2 North. Not content with promotion, we have added to our facilities in extra special ways, which everyone can enjoy this afternoon.
Annually I put into print my appreciation and thanks to the strong leadership of our hardworking Executive Committee and, of course our very many volunteers, without whom we would struggle. I realise that most sports clubs rely heavily on voluntary help but I think our various groups are a match for any club in the country. I believe it is also important to acknowledge the many parents who bring their children to join the minis then stay involved to become coaches, team managers, fund raisers and even - referees.
It is difficult in a one-off piece which remains in the programme for the whole season to react to weekly events but the contributions from Chairman, Mark Armstrong and Director of Rugby, Peter Evans do change game by game.
So a special thanks to both.

MARK ARMSTRONG
CLUB CHAIRMAN
Well there you go, another season comes to a close but this season has been like no other.
8 months ago we played our first game in National 2 and we went to Rotherham full of excitement, full of nerves but above all, full of pride.
It was a glorious sunny day, a day for such a landmark occasion when little old Billingham RUFC were taking on the mighty Rotherham Titans. So whilst it was a David v Goliath match, the outcome was not. As the players came off the field, we all knew we were playing in a new league and we all new we were playing at a new level. So whilst we gave a good account of ourselves and went on to win 4 games out of the first 6, the impact of this level of rugby was starting to tell.
Maybe it was written in the stars that the new boys, the amateur team from the North East were to start and close the season against the Champions elect. If I look at our squad today compared to 8 months ago, we are a full side missing, many with long term injuries.
If I look at what could happen today, I am once again filled with excitement, filled with nerves but above all filled with pride.I know in my heart, this is our level, and we will only improve playing season after season in National rugby, but the level we play next year comes down to todays 20 young men, how we execute and of course, destiny.
Rotherham have come here today to win the league, and whilst I believe in our team, it will be a phenomenal feat to stop that from happening. One point, 4 tries then nothing else matters and we will remain a National league side next year, outside of that we are relying on other results. So I am hoping for the same sunny weather and whilst a W would always be welcomed, I believe in destiny and I am looking forward to celebrate with Rotherham as they gain promotion and we stay in National 2.
It is poised to be a great day so please support your club. I mean where else would you go on a Saturday, Saturday is a rugby day. So for the last time this season, the last time in our centenary season, let’s hear that green machine roar. Let’s fill the balcony, cheer on our team and create a day to remember.
Our spirit is our strength.

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
PETER EVANS
SENIOR COACH
After the first game of the season we all discussed the strength of Rotherham and that they would be favourites to go up.
Written in stars if you like, they need to beat us for this to happen. I wont go through all the details of the potential outcomes, it’s extensive but we know we need to play well and work as hard as we’ve worked all season.
I wrote a piece for socials as a bit of drum-banging, come and get us over the line piece. I meant every word. I am incredibly proud of this club. Everyone will state it but we’ve had some serious adversity to overcome and through nothing but grit and determination we have put ourselves in a position where we know what we need to stay up. We had a period of 13 games where we picked up a few draws and bonus points, at that point it would have been easier to pack up for the season but that’s not in our DNA and will never be.
The support this season has genuinely been some of the best in the league with regular crowds in the top 3 in terms of attendance but the passion and noise has been motivating for all the players.
It will be the last in Billingham colours for a few and we will announce those post game as the sole focus is getting the requirement this club needs.
This is not an easy task and I have no doubt it wont be an easy watch but it's so exciting to still be mixing it up with these clubs and trying to prove ourselves. We will never lose that edge and attitude.
A massive thanks from to everyone who has had any input in our season. Everything is appreciated and we will leave it out on the pitch.
One last push.
